Whether you're a longtime Buckeye Lake regular or heading out for your first season on the water, knowing the rules isn't just smart — it's the law. Here's everything you need to know before you cast off.

□ Buckeye Lake–Specific Rules (ODNR)

Because Buckeye Lake is managed as an Ohio State Park by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), it carries regulations unique to this lake. Know these before you launch.

⚠️ Important: Towing watersports — water skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, and similar activities — are NOT permitted anywhere on Buckeye Lake. This applies to the entire lake.
⚡ Speed Zone (Western Portion)

A designated Speed Zone on the western portion of the lake allows faster-than-idle speeds — sunrise to sunset only. After sunset it reverts to No Wake.

□ No Wake — Rest of the Lake

All areas outside the Speed Zone are No Wake at all times. No Wake means the slowest speed needed to maintain steerage — not just "going slow."

□ Watch for Dredging Zones

Active dredging areas are marked with floating markers. Stay clear and follow posted signage around the lake.

□ Swimming from Watercraft

Swimming, diving, and wading from your boat is only permitted in officially designated boat swim areas. Not allowed in open water.

□ Public Alcohol Rules

In Ohio State Park areas, public consumption of alcohol is limited to cabins, campsites, and officially designated areas only.

□ Registration & Titling

Before you hit the water, your vessel must be properly registered and titled with the ODNR Division of Parks & Watercraft.

  • All motorized boats and sailboats over 12 feet must be registered.
  • Boats with motors of 10 HP or more — including jet skis — require an Ohio title from any county title office.
  • Transfer ownership within 30 days of purchase to avoid late fees.
  • Registrations are valid for 3 years, expiring March 1 of the renewal year.
  • Registration numbers must appear on both sides of the bow; tags affixed within 6 inches of the number.
  • 2024 fees start at $33 for motorized boats under 16 feet; larger vessels pay more.

□ Age & Education Requirements

Ohio requires boater education for anyone born after December 31, 1981.

  • Born after 12/31/1981? You must carry an Ohio Boater Education Certificate to operate any motorized watercraft over 10 HP.
  • Ages 12–15 may operate a motorized boat (over 10 HP) only with an adult (18+) physically on board.
  • Ages 16+ may operate a PWC/jet ski independently.
  • Ages 12–15 may operate a PWC only with an adult physically present and a valid Boater Education Certificate.
  • Education available online ($20–$40), in-person, or by equivalency exam (70% passing score required).

□ Life Jacket (PFD) Requirements

Ohio law requires life jackets for every person on every vessel — no exceptions.

  • Every person on board must have a USCG-approved wearable PFD (Type I, II, III, or V).
  • Boats 16 feet or longer must also carry one throwable Type IV PFD (ring buoy or seat cushion).
  • Children under 10 must wear their PFD at all times on vessels under 18 feet.
  • PWC operators and all passengers must wear a PFD while underway — always.
  • Anyone being towed must wear a Type I, II, III, or water-sport–rated Type V PFD.
□ ODNR recommends all boaters wear their life jackets at all times while on Buckeye Lake — not just when required by law.

□ Boating Under the Influence (BUI)

Ohio's BUI laws are just as serious as DUI laws. Sun, wind, and wave motion intensify alcohol's effects on the water — know your limits.

Who Legal BAC Limit
Operators 21 and over Under 0.08%
Operators under 21 Under 0.02%
  • BUI laws cover all watercraft — motorized, sailboats, jet skis, and non-motorized vessels.
  • Marijuana and other controlled substances fall under the same laws.
  • First offense: First-degree misdemeanor — 3–180 days jail, $150–$1,000 fine.
  • Second offense (within 6 years): 10–180 days jail, $150–$1,000 fine.
  • Refusing a chemical test results in a one-year suspension of boating privileges.

□ Required Safety Equipment

  • Fire extinguisher — required on boats with enclosed engine compartments or living spaces.
  • Sound device — a whistle or horn audible for at least ½ mile. Boats over 39.4 ft must also carry a bell.
  • Navigation lights — required when operating between sunset and sunrise or in reduced visibility.
  • Engine Cut-Off Switch (ECOS) — required on boats under 26 ft built after 2020 with motors over 3 HP.
  • Muffler — all motorized boats must run with a muffler. Cutouts or alterations are prohibited.

□️ General Speed & Operational Rules

  • Nighttime speed limit: 10 mph maximum on all Ohio state park lakes from sunset to sunrise.
  • Operate at a safe and prudent speed appropriate for current conditions at all times.
  • In narrow channels, keep to the right side as much as safely possible.
  • When leaving a dock or slip, yield right-of-way to all approaching vessels.
  • Reckless operation — weaving, creating hazardous wakes — is a misdemeanor and can result in boating privilege suspension.

□ Accident Reporting

  • File a Boat Accident Report with ODNR if an incident results in injury, death, disappearance, or property damage over $500.
  • Deadline: Within 5 days for minor accidents; within 24 hours for fatalities or missing persons.
  • Operators must stop, render aid, and provide contact information to others involved.
  • Failure to report a qualifying accident can result in misdemeanor charges.

    Buckeye Beach Park

My father Fred Bair loved Buckeye Lake, everything we do to improve the quality of life at the Park is dedicated to his generous life.  He was a good man and truly cared about people and Buckeye Lake.
•We have a full-service Marina with a 10’ Boardwalk that will run 400’ down the channel, it will have solar pole lighting and seating for fishing with several docks which will bode solar cap lighting, both covered and uncovered.  We offer winterization & shrink wrap prior to storing on our on-site location.
