The Rules of the Water

A little know-how keeps everyone safe and the day stress-free. Ohio boating laws and rental requirements are straightforward once you know them:

• Age requirements: Renters generally must be 21 to 25 years old, depending on the marina.
• Boater education: Anyone born on or after January 1, 1982 must show proof of a boating safety course to operate a boat with more than 10 horsepower.
• Life jackets: Every person on board needs a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Children under 10 and all jet ski riders and passengers must wear theirs at all times.
• Speed limits: A strict no-wake limit is enforced in all marked danger, shore, and no-wake zones. Outside designated ski zones the general limit is 10 mph, and 10 mph applies after sunset.
• Alcohol: Most rental companies prohibit alcohol on board, and Ohio law makes it illegal to operate any vessel while under the influence.

Important: Anyone being towed — tubing, wakeboarding, or water skiing — must wear a water-sport–rated life jacket. Ohio law strictly prohibits towing anyone without one, so make sure the right gear is on board before you head out.
