Most campers start packing up in August. And every year, the ones who stay a little longer come back the following season saying the same thing — why didn't we do this sooner? Fall at Buckeye Lake is something else entirely. Here's why. We've been on the shore of Buckeye Lake since 1986, and fall is hands-down our favorite time of year at the park. The energy shifts, the pace slows down, and the lake takes on a quality that's hard to describe until you've seen it yourself. Here are five reasons to rethink your end date this season. □ Reason #1 — The Foliage Around the Lake Is Stunning Buckeye Lake in October looks nothing like Buckeye Lake in July. The trees that line the shoreline, the islands, and the coves shift through every shade of orange, red, and gold — and when you're out on the water or sitting at the edge of the dock watching it all reflect back at you, it's one of those moments that stays with you. Central Ohio's fall color typically peaks in mid-to-late October. If you've only ever seen the lake in summer, you owe it to yourself to see it in fall at least once. We'd bet you'll be planning your October dates before you leave. □ Reason #2 — The Campfire Finally Feels Essential There's a big difference between a campfire in July and a campfire in October. In summer it's something to do. In fall it's something you genuinely need — and that changes everything about the experience. The chairs pull in closer. People stay outside longer. Conversations go later. The smell of woodsmoke and the sound of the lake at night are things you don't forget. Fall evenings at Buckeye Beach Park are some of the best camping we've seen in four decades on this lake. Bring good firewood, a cast iron pan, and plan to stay outside well past when you think you will. □ Reason #3 — The Crowds Are Gone and the Lake Is Yours Buckeye Lake on a Saturday in July is busy — and that's part of the fun. But Buckeye Lake on a Saturday in October is something different entirely. The boat traffic thins out. The shoreline gets quiet. You can sit on the dock with your coffee in the morning and hear nothing but water and birds. The lake feels bigger when fewer people are on it. Fall campers at Buckeye Beach Park consistently tell us it's their favorite time to be here for exactly this reason. You get all the beauty of the lake with a fraction of the crowd. If you've ever wished for more space and more quiet — this is your season. □ Reason #4 — Buckeye Lake Winery in the Fall Buckeye Lake Winery is a great evening out any time of year, but fall takes it to another level. The outdoor seating overlooks the lake, the harvest-season wines are pouring, and the evening air has that perfect crispness that makes a glass of red taste better than it has any right to. They run live music and events throughout the fall — check their calendar and build an evening around it. It's one of those off-site experiences our campers talk about most. A short drive from the park, easy to make into a whole evening, and completely worth it. Fall at the winery is one of the reasons people keep coming back to this lake long after summer ends. □ Reason #5 — Fall Fishing on Buckeye Lake Is Exceptional Serious anglers know what summer campers often don't — fall is one of the best fishing seasons on Buckeye Lake. As water temperatures drop, bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish move into feeding patterns that make them more active and more catchable than at any point during the summer. Early mornings and evenings in October are particularly productive. Plenty of our dock slip guests spend their fall mornings fishing right off the slip before the rest of the park wakes up. It's one of the quieter pleasures of staying into the season — and one of the best arguments for not pulling out in August when the fishing is just getting good. □ Bonus reason: Fall camping is cooler, which means better sleep, more comfortable days outside, and no fighting the AC all night. Coffee tastes better in the morning when it's 52 degrees and misty over the lake. Flannel and campfire smoke and the sound of geese overhead — if you know, you know. We've been watching fall arrive on Buckeye Lake for nearly four decades, and it never gets old. If your plan is to pack up at the end of August, we'd just ask you to consider pushing that date back — even by a few weeks. The lake has more to offer than most people realize, and fall is when it shows you its best side. See you around the campfire. □ □ Stay Into Fall at Buckeye Beach Park The only RV park and marina right on Buckeye Lake. Electric, water, and sewer hookups on every seasonal site.
